Camp Sailing, 10K Islands Jan 2019 Day0
Sailing out to the 10000 Islands on the SW Florida Gulf coast with the West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadron has always been a treat. Meet up with many excellent sailors, camp the islands of Collier County FL, plus sailing unique waters out on the Gulf or within the a labyrinth of water ways between the sand islands and mangroves. I think the boating group totaled seventeen boats this year.
There are a few boat ramps for launching around the area. There are trade offs as location, location and location. My preference is for the Calusa Island Marina. It is a bit more expensive than the Goodland ramp, but protected within a bayou. They have floating docks there, where the Goodland ramp docks are fixed. Calusa is a full service clean marina with a lot going on, high-n-dry launches, rentals, boat sales and long term tenants. I manage to get my tri rigged and launched single handed without much trouble. Guys launching at Goodland always help each other out. The ramp is open to the Coon Key inlet, and extra hands at the ramp and docks are essential.
I met Dan O. sailing his red TI at Calusa ramp. He was already on the water. Dan had not been to Panther Key before, the rendezvous point and typical base camp. He was going to follow me out to Panther. We got out on the water about 2pm on Thursday with a west wind of 8 knots right in our face. After bout 15 minutes, realized we were not going to make it to Panther with daylight left, I towed him out the pass. There the wind died. With not much for options, elected to just tow his boat, with Dan aboard my tri and motor sail. We got to Panther about 1630 with time to set camp, have a bite to eat and watch sunset at 1730.
Nice campfire and conversations that evening with shared drinks of course.
