Rigging and Deploying the Gennaker:


Have rigged the rip stop gennaker while on the water, as the bowsprit will not deploy on the trailer with the forward mast crutch in the way. Before to deploy the gennaker, the sheet blocks are secured on each outer aft aka. The sprit deploys with line through a screw eye to pull the sprit forward. The stop point is where a dyneema tension line from the sprit forward to where a bow eye should go. There is now bow eye on this boat. There is a leral hole in the bow where this dyneema line is secured. Later on, need to determine how to get a bow eye on this boat. It is that loop of dyneema that is also the only purchase point for the trailer winch strap.

So before to deploy the sprit while sitting straddling the bow with one leg port and starboard, connect the gennaker furler to the sprit pad eye. Also placed a twisted shackle on the fuler to line up the furler line for smooth pull aft when needed. I stow the gennaker in a sail bag, stuffed so that the furler and top swivel are ready at the bag opening. The gennaker halyard is checked not to interfere with the jib, the upper swivel is attached to the halyard snap shackle (BTW, the boat comes stock with the tie your own bowline when you need em halyards). Still straddling the bow, out goes the sprit with both ends of the gennaker connected and most of the sail still in the bag. Then with that third hand unraveling the furler line to port. With the forth hand, reach back to the mast and pull the halyard at the swivel cleat and up she goes while the fifth hand holds onto the sail bag and catches the gennaker sheets as they come out. It’s an awesome site to behold.

The sheets are respectively run aft. Swivel cleats were not provided, so to date the jib swivel blocks have been used. The sheets are run aft to the blocks set with nylon choke straps on the aft outer akas. The blocks will set the sheets outside the adjustable stays for the sail forward force to be applied from the sprit to outer aft ama. Until I get two additional swivel cleats, the jib sheets are wrapped, removed from the swivel cleats and secured on the cabin pad eyes. Underway, the gennaker is about 120% of the main, red, and to date has provided a very nice ride on a reach in 5 to 8 kts wind. In about 6 kts. wind, once did a run with gennaker only, main off the boom, swing keel up half way, for a few miles down the ICW averaging 5 kts.

I want get my process so to rig the gennaker up and down from a slack furled position, where the gennaker is laid out on one of the tramps.

  Trimarans

First became acquainted with trimaran sailing boats in the late 70s  while on a trip to Miami, riding converted Hobie 16 beach cat hulls that were added to a crafted center hull. Later discovered the rich history of multi-hulls and design from the writings of Jim Brown, Chris White and others.

This blog is will chronicle explicita, past exploits of discovery, sailing nuances and characteristics, plus after market modifications, and sailing adventures on the Astus 20.2 XL model named "Embouchure".
